How it works
Shingles shed water down and off the roof. Flashing seals the vulnerable joints around chimneys, valleys and vents. Underlayment is the backup layer if water gets past the surface, and attic ventilation keeps heat and moisture from cooking the assembly from below.
Keeping it healthy
- Inspect after major storms and at least once a year
- Keep gutters clear so water drains away properly
- Trim branches that overhang or rub the roof
- Check attic for daylight, stains or damp insulation
