Drains & sewer
The network that carries waste water out of your home, including traps and vents that keep sewer gas from coming back in.
Typical lifespan40–80 years
How it works
Every fixture has a U-shaped trap that holds a little water. That water plug is what blocks sewer gas from entering the room. Vent pipes let air into the system so drains flow smoothly instead of gurgling and siphoning those traps dry.
Keeping it healthy
- Run water in rarely used fixtures monthly to keep traps full
- Avoid pouring grease down kitchen drains
- Use strainers to catch hair and food
- Have the main line inspected if you have mature trees nearby
Warning signs
- Slow drains throughout the house
- Gurgling sounds from other fixtures when one drains
- Sewer odour indoors
- Water backing up in tubs or showers
