Electrical panel & wiring
The breaker panel distributes power through your home and cuts a circuit when it draws more current than it can safely carry.
Typical lifespan25–40 years
How it works
Power enters at the main breaker and splits across circuits. Each breaker is sized for its wire. When a circuit draws too much, or a fault occurs, the breaker trips — that is the system protecting you, not malfunctioning.
Keeping it healthy
- Label every circuit clearly
- Test GFCI outlets monthly with the test button
- Keep the panel accessible and dry
- Have an electrician inspect if the home is 40+ years old
Warning signs
- Breakers that trip repeatedly
- Warm or discoloured outlets and switch plates
- Burning smell near the panel or an outlet
- Lights that flicker across multiple rooms
- Buzzing or crackling from the panel
